How much is tuition?
Tuition depends on the teacher, lesson length, and whether you’re signing up for the semester or just a few lessons. As a general range, half-hour semester packages start around $1,200 and hour-long packages start around $1,895. Rates vary based on experience and format, and we’re happy to help find the right fit—just reach out to [email protected].

How long is a semester?
Each semester runs 18 weeks based on your lesson day, not including holidays. That includes 16 regular lessons followed by two makeup weeks. The fall semester typically runs from early September through January, and spring from early February through mid-June. Exact dates vary slightly each year and are always posted on our student portal calendar.
If I miss the start of a semester, can I still sign up?
Absolutely. As long as we have space, we’re happy to welcome new students anytime during the semester.
What is tuition if I start late in the semester?
Tuition is prorated based on your start date—so you’ll only pay for the lessons you’re scheduled to receive.
Do you offer 30 or 45-minute lessons?
We offer 30-minute lessons for our youngest students—typically kids under 5—or for first-timers who want to test the waters. Otherwise, our instructors are booked in hour-long blocks. You’re welcome to use as much or as little of that hour as you like, but we’ve found it’s the best use of time—and with our teachers, the hour really does fly by!
What age do you recommend starting?
It depends on the instrument and the individual student, but here are some general guidelines:
Piano: As early as age 3–4, sometimes even 2 with strong interest and support at home
Ukulele: Around age 4–5—perfect for small hands and quick musical wins
Drums: Age 4–5, once basic coordination and focus are in place
Voice: While we introduce young children (typically 5–7) to singing and musicality, we hold off on formal voice training until around age 9–10
Woodwinds: Generally age 9+, once lungs and hands are more developed
Strings: Violin can start as early as 4–5; cello around 6–7
Guitar: Usually around age 6–7, depending on hand size and fine motor skills
Every student is different. If you're unsure, just reach out to [email protected]—we’ll help you find the right time and fit for your child.

Do you have a recital?
YES! It's the highlight of the year, much more of a show than a recital. Students have the opportunity to perform with the faculty band in a spectacular NYC venue.
Do we need to own an instrument?
Yes—students need an instrument at home for both lessons and practice. If you don’t already have one, we’re happy to guide you. We’ve partnered with Sweetwater to help families find high-quality instruments at fair prices, and we can also recommend rental options if that’s a better fit.
Can we do a trial lesson?
Absolutely! The first three weeks for each new student are considered a trial period. Check our policies page for details.
What can we expect for our child's curriculum?
While each teacher shares a similar teaching philosophy, they tailor each student's curriculum. We teach music like learning your first language – developing the ear first, then reading and analysis. Initially, students learn fun songs by ear, and as they progress, we incorporate more theory, reading, repertoire, and songwriting. The goal is a refined recital piece by the year's end.
How much should my child be practicing?
For our youngest students, we recommend encouraging play and performance—exploring the instrument and sharing music with others. A little really does go a long way. As students progress, we begin talking with them about how to practice, not just how often. Consistency always wins—a focused 7 minutes can do far more than an unfocused hour.
Can you bring a keyboard or piano to the lesson?
No, but our online lessons allow for two pianos at once.
Does WillYouLearn run background checks on its faculty?
Yes. Every member of our faculty undergoes a background check—we take safety and trust seriously, and we only work with teachers we’d trust with our own kids.
Does someone need to supervise the lesson?
Yes—an adult must be present in the home during the entire lesson. They don’t need to sit in, but they do need to be someone who takes full responsibility for the safety and well-being of the student and the space. If no adult is present, the teacher will not enter the home, and the lesson will be forfeited without makeup. This policy is non-negotiable.
