Henry P. - Piano
Henry is a dedicated jazz pianist, educator, and music historian with nearly a decade of experience performing and teaching in New York. He has played at renowned venues across Nashville, D.C., and New York City, sharing the stage with legendary artists like Steve Wilson, Miguel Zenón, Randy Brecker, and Marvin ‘Bugalu’ Smith. His musical journey has been shaped by mentorship from some of jazz’s finest, including Bruce Barth, Fred Hersch, and Don Sickler.
As an educator, Henry has spent the last three years teaching students of all ages. His teaching philosophy emphasizes a collaborative and flexible learning environment, influenced by his time studying with Bruce Barth at Columbia University. Henry encourages exploration and creativity, making each lesson a shared journey of discovery between student and teacher.
Central to his teaching is an "ears-first" approach, focusing on ear training as the foundation for musical growth. Whether students are interested in jazz or any other genre, Henry’s method helps them connect deeply with the music. He is particularly proud of a student who learned Bach’s First Prelude by ear before advancing to sight-reading.
Patience, empathy, and adaptability are at the core of Henry’s lessons. He tailors his approach to each student's needs, developing personalized exercises and pacing to ensure they find their own musical voice. His goal is to inspire a lifelong love of music, helping students stay engaged and motivated.
Henry holds a Bachelor of Arts in Intellectual History from Columbia University, where he was active in the Louis Armstrong Jazz Performance Program. He has also worked with the Nashville Jazz Workshop, performing and teaching in community outreach programs.
At WillYouLearn, Henry brings his passion for teaching and his ear-based philosophy to guide students in discovering and developing their unique musical paths.
