A longtime WYL neighborhood
Some of WYL’s earliest students were in Chelsea. Will also taught at Avenues for nine years, so this part of Manhattan has been part of WYL from the beginning.
He is still in the neighborhood teaching every Tuesday, near Seventh Avenue and 18th Street. His own schedule is currently full, but WYL has other Manhattan teachers with openings.
From a Chelsea family
One Chelsea family came to WYL through the music department chair at their children’s school. Two of their children have studied piano with Will since 2022.
“We appreciate his approach to teaching and learning piano, which at first is about enjoying the instrument, while at the same time cleverly sneaking in music theory, music reading, physical technique. In other words, he is sensitive about the tradeoffs among the joy of learning, the need to learn to play by ear, and the grind of developing a base of technical skills.”

Current Chelsea + Flatiron availability
This is a current Manhattan snapshot, not the full faculty. Availability depends on instrument, student age, exact location and how a teacher’s existing route fits together.
The point is not to send somebody across town for one isolated lesson. We try to build teaching days that make sense for the family and the teacher.

The match
We match students around age, personality, musical taste, experience, goals, schedule and location. The aim is to find a teacher the student connects with and wants to keep learning from.
Sometimes that relationship lasts for years. Sometimes the right teacher changes as the student gets older, changes instruments or wants something different. WYL gives the relationship room to evolve without making a family start over from scratch.
Private lessons in Chelsea + Flatiron
Private, in-home piano lessons for young beginners, older children, teenagers and adults. Classical, jazz, pop, improvisation, songwriting, reading, technique and ear training.
Piano lessons →Acoustic and electric guitar, ukulele, bass, rock, jazz, pop, songwriting and improvisation.
Guitar lessons →Technique, repertoire, interpretation and confidence, built around music the student actually wants to sing.
Voice lessons →Drums, rhythm, ensemble playing and other instruments depending on current faculty availability.
Meet the faculty →How we teach
We put the ear at the center of learning. Students listen, imitate, sing, experiment and play before music becomes a collection of instructions on a page.
That does not mean ignoring reading, theory or technique. Those things matter. We introduce them in the context of music the student can already hear, recognize and care about.
The Chelsea parent above described the balance well: there is the joy of learning, the need to play by ear, and the grind of building real technical skills. Good teaching is not choosing one of those things. It is knowing when each one needs to lead.
The best moment in a lesson is often when the student stops waiting for the next instruction and says, “Wait. Show me that.”

Will is still in Chelsea teaching every Tuesday, near Seventh Avenue and 18th Street. His own schedule is full, but having established teaching routes in the neighborhood makes it easier to build around other WYL teachers too.
Adults too
WYL also teaches adults in Chelsea and Flatiron, from complete beginners to returning players and experienced musicians. Lessons start with what you want to play, what you listen to and what you want to get better at.
