Piano for a young beginner?
Yes. We teach private in-home piano lessons for preschool, Pre-K and elementary-age beginners, with listening, imitation and playing at the center of the first lessons.
From Lincoln Square to Columbia.
WillYouLearn teaches kids and adults across the Upper West Side, with teachers coming to students at home for private piano, guitar, voice and other music lessons. One of our current piano teachers, Max Flysch, is based in the neighborhood and has weekday availability.

A good place to learn music
Lincoln Center is at the bottom of the neighborhood. Smoke is uptown. Carnegie Hall is close enough to count. Students on the Upper West Side grow up with some of the best music in the city nearby.
That does not mean every lesson needs to point toward a concert stage. It just means there are plenty of reminders of what learning an instrument can lead to.
WYL is a private lesson at home, but it is never very far from the larger musical life of New York.
A UWS piano teacher
Max Flysch is based on the Upper West Side and already maintains a private teaching studio in the neighborhood. He trained as a classical pianist at Oberlin and brings music theory, ear training and coordinated piano technique into the same musical conversation.
That makes him useful for a wide range of students: young beginners building good physical habits, students who want to understand what they are playing more deeply, and experienced pianists who need a thoughtful technical and musical eye.
Current Upper West Side + Manhattan availability
This is a current snapshot, not the full faculty. Exact options depend on instrument, student age, location and how a teacher’s existing route fits together.
Max is the most obvious UWS anchor right now because he is already based in the neighborhood. Other Manhattan teachers may work too depending on the day and schedule.

Current teaching schedule is full
Ask about the waitlist or another WYL teacher.
Meet Will →One teacher being full does not mean WYL is full. Tell us the instrument, student age, exact location and schedule you need and we’ll check the broader faculty for the best current fit.
Where we teach
We teach from Lincoln Square through the 70s, 80s and 90s, up through Manhattan Valley and Morningside Heights, and as far north as the Columbia University area.
For lessons on the UWS, we ask for a few extra minutes between lessons for an obligatory stop at Zabar’s :)
Lessons on the Upper West Side
Classical, jazz, pop, improvisation, songwriting, reading, technique and ear training, from first lessons through advanced study.
Piano lessons →Acoustic and electric guitar, ukulele, bass, songs, riffs, groove, improvisation, rock, jazz, pop and songwriting.
Guitar lessons →Technique, range, repertoire, interpretation and confidence, connected to music the student actually wants to sing.
Voice lessons →Drums, rhythm, ensemble playing and other instruments depending on the student and current faculty availability.
Meet the faculty →How we teach
We put the ear at the center of learning. Students listen, imitate, sing, experiment and play before music becomes a collection of instructions on a page.
That does not mean ignoring reading, theory or technique. Those things matter. We introduce them in the context of music the student can already hear, recognize and care about.
Different teachers bring different backgrounds, repertoires and personalities to the room. The point is not to make every lesson identical. It is to help a student become increasingly independent as a musician.
The best moment in a lesson is often when the student stops waiting for the next instruction and says, “Wait. Show me that.”
From an Upper West Side family
One UWS dad described his nine-year-old boys as much more interested in sports and computers than piano. The point was never to force them into someone else’s idea of musicianship. It was to find the music that was already in there.
“Our 9-year old boys are more interested in sports and computers, respectively. Will managed to bring out the music in both. He has a gift for teaching children. The end of term recital proved to be an amazing experience for our boys, despite one having severe jitters, playing onstage in an actual music venue with backing musicians. Truly a great moment.”

A small UWS story
One of our Upper West Side students played a Herbie Hancock tune for a WYL virtual recital. Herbie Hancock liked the video.
That was a pretty good recital review.
Adults too
WYL works with adult beginners, returning players and experienced adults on the Upper West Side too. Lessons start with what you want to play, what you listen to and what you want to get better at.
