Q. What can we expect for our child's curriculum?
While each teacher subscribes to the same methodology and philosophy, we have the experience to tailor each students curriculum individually. Our philosophy is to teach music the way you learned your first language – first by developing the ear and then through reading and analysis. At first you can expect a student to learn familiar and fun songs by ear. As the ear develops we incorporate more theory, reading, repertoire and song writing. The cumulative goal at the end of the year is for each student to produce a refined recital piece that can be played with our faculty band when appropriate.
Q. How much should my child be practicing?
Daily practice is crucial but duration depends on level and age. We encourage are youngest students to simply play everyday. This might entail the 30 seconds it takes to play "Hot Cross Buns" at first. As a student progresses and ages the amount of material they have will increase the length. Learning to practicing is an ever evolving problem-solving skill that will be in constant development. Part of our job is to teach our students how to practice well and how to problem solve, an invaluable skill in any field. Keep in ming, while practice is a necessary part of developing your skills, it is not the most important thing. Our platform Stay Sharp provides students with a unique set of practice tools.
