About Jared
New York lifelong.
Jared Weiss was born in Manhattan and studied Vocal Performance at NYU Steinhardt. His professional life has kept him moving between theatre, concerts, songwriting, and his own music.
He has been a longtime collaborator with composer Joe Iconis, appearing in musicals, workshops, and concerts with Joe Iconis & Family. That work has taken Jared to stages including Lincoln Center, 54 Below, Le Poisson Rouge, Joe’s Pub, Ars Nova, and venues around New York.
His theatre credits include Roger in RENT, Hair at La MaMa, and Things to Ruin. Jared also created the role of Bob Dylan in Larry Mollin’s Search: Paul Clayton, contributing original music to the production.
Jared’s work is unusually hard to separate into neat categories: singer, actor, songwriter, guitarist, storyteller. That breadth is also part of what he brings into a lesson.

Jared’s relationship with the music of Bob Dylan has become a substantial project of its own. After playing Dylan in Search: Paul Clayton, he created Dylan on Dylan, a full-band concert that follows Dylan from his early Greenwich Village period through the Rolling Thunder Revue years.
Dylan on Dylan has played 54 Below in New York and traveled to Casa Mañana in Fort Worth for a five-night residency. Jared has also appeared in Lincoln Center’s American Songbook with members of the Joe Iconis community.
The lesson

Jared teaches voice, guitar, piano, and songwriting across musical theatre, classical vocal repertoire, pop, rock, folk, and singer-songwriter music.
He has more than a decade of teaching experience and has worked extensively with young children, including toddlers. His teaching work has also included adaptive music settings through New York City’s ADAPT schools.
With singers, Jared is particularly interested in the person behind the sound. Technique matters, but the goal is not to make every student sing the same way. He works toward a voice that is healthy, flexible, expressive, and recognizably their own.
Guitar, piano, and songwriting can become part of that same process. A student may be learning accompaniment, writing an original song, working through harmony, preparing theatre repertoire, or simply trying to understand how the music they love actually works.
Jared's music
Isolated Thunderstorms.
Jared released his debut indie-rock album Isolated Thunderstorms in 2018. The record grew out of folk songwriting but stretches into rock, theatre, and the kind of large-scale storytelling that runs through much of Jared’s performance work.
The album was produced by Fred Mollin and recorded with Nashville musicians. It is another useful piece of context for Jared as a teacher: songwriting for him is not an abstract exercise. He has taken songs from private writing through arrangement, recording, production, release, and live performance.
