Richard Mikel - Bass, Guitar

​For over 20 years, Richard Mikel has been in pursuit of a melodic and supportive existence as a bassist. Focusing mainly on jazz and classical genres as an upright bassist, his early years were spent exploring a variety of styles on the electric bass. Shortly after graduating from the University of Northern Colorado (BM in Jazz Performance), Richard was a finalist in the 2011 International Society of Bassist Jazz Competition held in San Francisco. Spending the next few years 'in-demand' while living in Austin, Texas, Richard maintained a private studio, gained experience in the recording studio and performed nightly. A resident of New York since 2017, Richard continues to grow as a musician and educator. In addition to teaching students of all ages, he leads ensemble rehearsals for adults interested in learning to play jazz in a group setting.


As an educator, Richard encourages students to build a natural relationship with their instrument by balancing technique, creativity and curiosity.
